"At Curtisville Primary Center, we believe that overall wellness leads to engaged learning!" Principal Jennifer Cavalanca said. "We are committed to creating a school environment that supports the whole child - body and mind. That means helping our students learn about nutrition, physical health, and mental/emotional well-being. By integrating these habits into our everyday activities, we give children the tools they need to focus in class, feel their best and build healthy habits that can last a lifetime."
Some initiatives initiatives at Curtisville Primary include:
*Increased opportunities for physical activity with classroom movement/brain breaks, Walking Fridays, partnership with Kids of Steel, etc.
*Nutrition lessons in which students explore fruits and vegetables while learning the health benefits and growing process. Some of the items are grown in our Tower Gardens that are cared for by our students and teachers.
*Social-Emotional Learning lessons for all students where students identify feelings, problem solving strategies, and grow their self-care toolbox.
*Our building-level Wellness Committee focuses on providing opportunities for students, families, and staff to engage in wellness practices throughout the school year. Families receive a Wellness for Good Newsletter periodically with ideas to reflect on at home.
"For us, receiving recognition as one of America's Healthiest Schools, is representative of our great commitment to support the whole child which provides the foundation necessary for lifelong learning and healthier living," Mrs. Cavalancia said. "I'm appreciative of Alliance for a Healthier Generation for promoting the incorporation of wellness into the school environment."
